Why does my new MBP's cursor freeze?

I have a brand new late-2016 15" retina MBP. Even thought it's brand new, I often find the cursor freezes when I move it.

When I got the computer, I used Migration Assistant to convert it to the last backup of my old computer. But I can't think of any other thing I did that might be an issue. It has a 500 GB HD and over 50 GB's of free space. I used to make the cursor super large but made it smaller as per advice I saw on another question but it hasn't changed it. Any advice? It's super annoying!

I would suspect it's a software issue. Maybe something installed on the internal storage that's causing it...or a conflict between two installed 3rd party apps.

One thing you can check on is...apps that auto-launch. Go to:

- Apple Menu
- System Preferences
- Users & Groups
- Login Items tab

See if there are items listed that could possibily be causing an issue.

p.s. By the way (just a terminology thing). You don't have a 500gig HD in your 2016 MBP. You have 500gig of flash storage. HD's are the "spinning" things.;)
p.s.s. Also. You didn't waste anytime filling that drive up. 450 out of 500 gigs already used. Lol

How can I tell which one of these apps might be interfering with each other?

And, yeah, I filled it quick. I wish I'd more space!

Don't know... Not sure if you're talking about "regular" non-auto launching apps...or auto-launching apps (I mentioned both). Don't know what apps we are talking about or if there even are any (did you check)?:)

But the testing method would be "trial & error". Don't launch certain apps (or in combination with other apps)...and see if you have better stability or not.

If you REALLY wanted to test things. You would need to start fresh...and erase & reformat the storage. Then ONLY install the OS...and then only the OS would be involved.

Also. What model computer did you upgrad from. If you upgraded from a really old computer...to a new 2016 computer. A lot of stuff from that old computer may be causing issues.

Also, what version of Mac OS X/OS X/macOS did you migrate from? Maybe you had older software that is not compatible with this new macOS Sierra?

Increasing the size of the cursor shouldn't make any difference whatsoever. I would suggest running EtreCheck and posting the results here - it'll tell us what apps open automatically when you start up your computer, and what open apps are using the most resources. We might be able to help narrow down the cause with this information.

Your computer is running macOS 10.12.3, so I can see you haven't updated your computer since you first started using it. The latest release is 10.12.6 - it's always a good idea to keep the operating system up to date before attempting to diagnose issues like this because it will allow us to better narrow down the possible cause. I would first suggest installing all available operating system and app updates via the Mac App Store.

From looking at the diagnostics, the only two items I can see that might possibly be connected to this issue is configd and media-indexer - both processes are reported to have caused high CPU load a few days ago. I have noticed you have CrashPlan installed - this might possibly be the cause of configd utilising a lot of CPU power.

Realistically speaking, even if your CPU is under high load it shouldn't necessarily cause your cursor to freeze repeatedly. Your computer will certainly feel slow, of course. Out of interest, do you recall experiencing any issues on Thursday between 12 PM and 1 PM?

I'm still wondering what Mac OS X/OS X/macOS version your old Mac was running? Maybe something that came over when you used Migration Assistant, that is not compatible with your nes macOS Sierra?

So, I upgraded to 10.12.6, and the problem seems mostly solved. Occasionally, the cursor gets stuck for a second but it isn't doing it nearly as much. It does seem weird I was never prompted to update to the latest software. I had to manually do it but I did.

I dont recall problems that Thursday. Why do you ask?

From the diagnostics you posted, there was high CPU utilisation on Thursday at 12.17 PM and again at 12.55 PM. I have a suspicion there is some interplay between the configd process and CrashPlan, but this is purely an educated guess from the diagnostic data you've posted. I take it you are aware you have CrashPlan installed?

While I wouldn't recommend turning off or disabling backup software, it might be worthwhile checking to see if there is any difference without CrashPlan running in the background. If you're happy to temporarily turn off or close the application, make sure you make alternate arrangements for backing up anything important during that time.

If this proves unsuccessful, there are some other options we can explore but your issue is highly likely to be caused by some third party software running in the background.

It might be Crashplan. Here's the weird thing: I no longer use it but I can't delete it. I tried downloading their software and running uninstall but that doesn't get rid of it. When I try to delete the application, I get the message, "The operation can’t be completed because the item “CrashPlan” is locked."

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance (especially you, bbnck. You rock!)

I asked, because if you used Migration Assistant, and came from an older (10.6 or earlier) version of Mac OS X, on your old machine, some issues may be caused by this.

You rock!)

CrashPlan likely installs itself as the root user. This is normal behaviour as it means it doesn't need to ask for your password each time it runs if it needs to do things that require administrative (i.e. root) privileges.

If you're having trouble uninstalling it, this might sound counterintuitive but I would suggest reinstalling it and then trying the uninstaller again afterwards. If it prompts you to restart your Mac after it finishes installing itself, make sure you do that before you uninstall the software.

After you've uninstalled the software successfully, you can completely purge CrashPlan from your system by deleting the following support directories - although this is not strictly necessary, as it simply contains the settings for the application.

  • ~/Library/Application Support/CrashPlan
  • /Library/Application Support/CrashPlan
The two might look the same but there is a difference between them and they both exist independently of each other. The tilde (~) is an alias (or shortcut) to your home folder - this is the directory that contains your Documents, Music, Movies and Downloads folders for your user account. For example, going to ~/Library is the same as going to /Users/oxband/Library (that is, if your computer account username happens to be oxband).

Before I bore you any further, you can quickly delete these directories by opening the Terminal application (located in Applications -> Utilities) and pasting the following command:

sudo rm -Rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/CrashPlan && sudo rm -Rf /Library/Application\ Support/CrashPlan && echo "Done."

You will be prompted to enter your password after you hit the Enter key to run the command. As you type in your password, do note you won't see any output in the Terminal until you hit the Enter key again.

@oxband...I am by no means a Mac guru. My rookie observations after reviewing your report may reveal something someone else can help with. My observations:
  • Your SSD is 90% full. Move a bunch of stuff to external storage.
  • Your Flash Player is not up to date.
  • You have lots of good apps...but it doesn't appear you have ONYX...a Mac's owner's best friend (IMO).
  • Possibly trashing some of your apps' .plist files will help with some of the Launch Daemons/Agents that have failed to launch. I am under the impression they will rebuild themselves once launched again?!?!?!?
  • Maybe a nuke and pave is in order to rid your Mac of all unwanted, unnecessary scraps, bits , and pieces from antiquated software from days gone by to help your machine run more efficiently...a fresh start/clean slate:D

I see Time machine is not configured...do you have some way of backing up your computer routinely?

...just my 2¢ worth. Take from it anything you need and leave the rest!

What system do you use migration assistant with? Was it a Windows machine, or another Mac, and what specific OS was that machine running?

I'd suggest doing either or both of the following:

1. Reboot your Mac and launch Activity monitor as usual. Make sure that you select the tab that shows CPU use. Go abo9ut your normal computing routine until the problem occurs. What process is eating the most cpu time then?

2. Create a new user account and see if the problem occurs with that account as well. If it doesn't that would suggest that something loading in the first account is at issue.

Sorry that hadn't helped. It was worth a shot.

As someone else had pointed out, you don't have much storage space left on your SSD. This shouldn't make a difference to the performance of your MacBook Pro as far as I am aware, but you might want to take a look at  > About This Mac > Storage > Manage... and look at some of the recommendations to optimise storage space.

I would also suggest resetting the NVRAM on your Mac to see if this helps. You can read more about doing this here. It involves holding down a combination of keys when you start up your Mac for about 20 seconds.
