Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 13 running El Capitan.

I was looking at something on the web when a small window popped up

Any ideas as to why there is a MBP 2 to start off and why a MBP 3? There's only ever been 1 MBP on the system.

I've had this happen before when my iMac and MacBook are online at the same time. When I set up the iMac I gave it the same name as the MacBook Pro. Not a problem until they are both online at the same time. This can also occur if you set things up by cloning things from one machine to another then put both machines on at the same time.

I'm sure there are probably other reasons but they elude me at the moment.

Hi John - same name change happened on my MBPro a few years ago, i.e. now w/ a '2' attached - not a problem, so never decided to change it back - my assumption was the DHCP service in my Apple Extreme router likely had the same internal URL assignment to two devices and made the name change - not sure, but I have over a dozen devices being managed on that router. Hopefully, one of our 'networking gurus' will 'chime in' w/ a better explanation. Dave :)

Ta for the info folks. I have gone into the router settings and changed it back to MBP-1, just to try to keep it tidy.

I was quite surprised though because we lost WIFI a couple of days back and I phoned the Orange English help line and they talked me through a factory reset and it reset the password! It's several digits of the wep so that too was good fun, but it got the WIFI back:Cool::Cool:

I may be mistaken for your actual situation but I think you'll find the networkname of each networked Mac and it can be changed there as well:
System Preferences > Sharing > Computer Name > Edit

PS: No spaces and only allowed characters accepted, and yes, one can add some pretty funny or cryptic or crude "names". But they are usually reserved for office sharing use.

I think that I will leave it alone as I have just had yet another look at it and it now reads 'name-name-MacBook-2-1

It's operating OK, so on the old engineers principle 'if it ain't broken then don't mend it'..

Edit both the editable name areas if need be to change it to a normal name. Normal Mac text editing methods apply. :Blushing:

The name is only normally used if and when file sharing so no big deal.

But not much effort needed to change " 'name-name-MacBook-2-1" to "Jonzjob-MacBook" or whatever you might want. Maybe even "The_Woodworker's-MacBook" or maybe "Le_Woodworker's-MacBook" or "John_Le Woodworker's-MacBook" ;)

I was going to suggest something else, but I think it would be censored here!!! :Blushing:

LOL!!!

Thanks John, but the Doctor insists I consume only ONE med-small glass of the elixir a day at the most.
Doing so should avoid a hospital visit and I've had enough of those recently!!!

PS: I like your sig!!! ;D

You're quite right John and I used to think and do the same thing but realized it was sound medical advice and for a good reason and it was MY body he was trying to protect!! ;-)

Please, please don't ever take me seriously Patrick. I just can't do serious, well very seldom? My burning ambition has, for a long time, to gro old disacefully and SWMBO says I'm doing quite well so far, as do most of our friends :Cool:

Don't worry John, and it seems my smiley-winkie didn't turn out too well at the end of my post. I tend to try using some Irish type humour myself that often backfires or is taken the wrong way by some.

This sounds sort of similar that I came across the other day and sounds like a good and maybe better idea when one has finished growing old…

I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my grandfather…

Not screaming and yelling like the passengers in his car.

But maybe not the best for some others…
