I have recently bought an iMac I have installed my existing HP printer having simply connected via the USB port at the rear. Some of the features I have previously used are absent. My question if I used the HP installation CD to add some features will there be any conflict between the Mac software and the software on the disc? In my opinion the printer is applying too much ink. Any help or guidance will be very much appreciated. and my thanks in advance

The software might or might not conflict depending upon how old the software is. Some software will also conflict if two different versions of the software are installed at the same time.

It would help if you told us which HP printer? And our second question is - have you been to the HP site and check to see if they have the latest drivers for download?

Many thanks for your replies. The HP Printer Photosmart 8450 dop 2006 yikes !!! surely it's not all that long time ago, just checked my user manual, doesn't time fly. My first thought was a visit to the HP site all to no avail I'm afraid. The reason for my worry is the printer is producing too much ink so much so that I can see feint images/text on the reverse. Inevitably a new printer will be the answer I am now thinking. Thank you once again for your replies.

If your HP Photosmart is producing too much ink, put it in Draft Mode (if it allows you to). If no draft mode, then it's time for a new printer.

Hi there, Yes the Draft Mode is unfortunately absent here with the iMac. Previously in, I'll whisper this next bit, Windows 7 all the features were available. The HP Photosmart 8450 has been very good ever since the day of purchase ten years back, all I've ever needed to do is replace the ink cartridges. Sadly it's time to re new I will buy a multi function print scan copy model. There seems good reviews of the Canon Pixma MX925, Canon Pixma 7750 it's time to decide. Once again many, many thanks for all of the replies

FWIW: I just thought I'd mention that the HP Photosmart 8450 is still supported by Apple and their provided software and is listed under HP as:
Photosmart 8400 series

Printer and scanner software for macOS Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, and Mavericks

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT201465

Maybe delete what's existing on the Mac and reinstall the Apple version??? It just MIGHT work better.
