I'm using Mac Mail version 10.3 on the Sierra OS X with an imap setting.
How can I configure Mac Mail so that when I delete an email on Mac Mail, a copy of the email remains on the server of my ISP.

Thanks for any tips.

You cannot. That's how IMAP works. Why do you want to retain a copy on the server? Maybe we can find a workaround for what you want to accomplish.

Unless your ISP allows for that option the mail will be deleted when using IMAP. Usually that option only refers to POP accounts where mail can remain on the server after you delete it from your Mac. And even with some POP accounts it may be limited. Gmail will allow you to store mail on its servers using a POP account provided it doesn't exceed your allotted amount. I keep two accounts active for that very reason: One IMAP and one POP.

LOL, Jake beat me again.

I just like the idea of having an archive of emails stored on my ISP for future reference if needed.
At the same time I like deleting emails from the Mac Mail client when I no longer have an immediate need for them.

You can archive those emails you particularly want to keep.

Whether IMAP or POP, you can create a mailbox " on my Mac" called, say, Archive.

Then move or copy, as you will, those emails you have received or sent to the Archive mailbox.

It's unlikely you would want to store every email received or sent, so you can be selective.

Or you can set up rules to move emails to Archive according to criteria determined by you.
