I use a beautiful British website to send ecards and they now use HTML 5 instead of Flash. I can't view the cards anymore. Is there a work around for this? Chrome is never happening on any of my devices! I tried with both Safari & Firefox. Do I need an add-on, and if so, what please.

Reset Safari & Firefox, clear cache too. Or maybe a restart of the computer. Log out, then log back in may work also.

Thanks Bob, but I've already done that, and it didn't help. Weird, isn't it?!

"HTML 5" is now simply known as "HTML". Any (and every) browser for the Macintosh that you may have downloaded in the last couple of years supports it, including Safari and Firefox. No add-ons or anything else is necessary. If you are having a problem, it is likely due to the individual Web site you are trying to access.

You can test to see how well your browser supports HTML 5 for free here:
https://html5test.com/index.html

You can see how your browser compares to others here:
https://html5test.com/results/desktop.html

You can test how well your browser supports HTML 5 video here:

By the way, if your aversion to Chrome is because of Google's included tracking software, you should know that Chrome is based on open source software available to any developer. That means that anyone can take that code and develop a browser extremely similar to Chrome, but without any ties to Google or their tracking software. And several companies have. The most interesting one (at least currently, and to me) is Slimjet, which is incredibly fast, very secure, includes ad-blocking, can use Chrome's plug-ins and themes, and is free:

Thanks Randy! Did all of the above, and I really like SlimJet; it's lightning fast. But --- the problem must be with the website, as now I get a message saying the video isn't supported in this browser. I was convinced the problem was with the website to begin with, but they keep claiming otherwise. Maybe I need a "British browser"! I guess my only option is to use Chrome just for this website, or not send ecards. It's a shame, because the cards are gorgeous. Take a look: jacquielawson.com
Thanks for your help. Tried to give you a thumbs up, but it told me to spread it around before giving you another.

I didn't realise that the problem website was jacqielawson. I've had endless trouble with them. Their customer support is near to non- existent, but what I did finally get from them is that they don't, in general, support Apple. Nothing against Apple. They did make that clear but their products are designed for Windows PCs and you can't view them on Safari or Firefox, only on Chrome; on the Mac.

Shame, as you said, because the cards are nice.

Their customer support is pretty awful; they follow a script and just keep repeating the same thing over and over even after you tell them it didn't work. I've used their cards for years with no problem, but according to them their new cards use "HTML5" instead of Flash, so that's why I can't view them. It took half a dozen emails to get that answer, and because I won't use Chrome they cancelled my subscription!

Can't give you a thumbs up, as they tell me to spread the love, but thank you much!

One more thing that you may want to try. The Brave browser is also based on Chrome, it's very secure, etc. And free. It's worth a shot.

YAHOO - that works!!! Thanks so much! Brave is an interesting browser; it pulled in all my bookmarks from Firefox without my doing anything. Thanks Randy!

YAHOO - that works!!! Thanks so much!

My pleasure!

Interestingly, there are literally over 200 Web browsers for the Macintosh! Here is a Web site that keeps track of them all, complete with short reviews:
http://www.knutson.de/

That site is currently being updated. If you can't access it, try:
http://web.archive.org/web/20160507005619/http://www.knutson.de/mac/www/browsers.html

Another fascinating Web browser that folks might want to try out is WaterFox. Like Chrome, Firefox is based on open source code. So this kid took Firefox's codebase and optimized it to make best use of Apple's latest technology, both hardware and software, to create WaterFox. If you have a really recent Macintosh, WaterFox should fly!

However, currently Opera, Epic, and Slimjet are my favorite browsers. Each one for a different reason.

Seriously though, I had no idea how many alternative browsers were available for the Mac.

I know, right? Without that link, I probably wouldn't even have mentioned how many there actually are, because some folks would accuse me of having made that number up.

I try to keep on top of what's going on with alternate browsers because they keep on one-upping each other.

So, for right now Opera is really attractive because it has a free VPN service built-in:
http://www.opera.com/
Not to mention that it's fast, and has a ton of really nice features.

However, with the recent (almost unfathomable) decision by congress (here in the U.S.) to allow ISP's to spy on users and sell their information, many folks have turned to the TOR network to maintain their anonymity. The TOR folks offer a browser that uses the TOR network by default with no add-ons necessary:
https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en

The Epic browser is many people's choice for remaining anonymous on the Web. Google is trying to strangle them out of existence, sadly.
https://www.epicbrowser.com/

Both SlimJet and WaterFox are impressively fast. SlimJet seems to be the faster of the two right now, but WaterFox has more features.

For now there is no one browser that comes with all the features that one might want. Opera is probably the closest, and it is currently what I use most often. I'll post again if things change.

Going to spend this evening checking out these browsers - thanks Randy! Who knew?! I can't afford a VPN, so Opera sounds especially good. You folks are just the best!

Well, I tried SlimJet last night and it lasted about 10 minutes before I removed it. It might be fast, but I didn't like the interface or the way it gathered bookmarks. As for Opera, I too am put off by the fact it was sold. I don't think it matters if it was sold to a Chinese company or not, I just don't like the way Opera does things. It was a great browser at one time especially back in the days when it first appeared for Windows. Back then it was a pay app and also included email and some other things that I have forgotten.

I think I will stick with Safari, Chrome, and Epic for now. As for wanting to use a good VPN, Randy gave a comprehensive list a while back. The one that I personally like is Tunnel Bear. Take a look at it and see what you think.

How does VPN support work in Opera?

http://www.opera.com/computer/features/free-vpn

"To activate the free VPN in Opera, go to the browser settings and check the Enable VPN box in the Privacy and security section. You’ll see a button in the browser address field where you can adjust VPN preferences, turn the feature off and on, as well as see stats on data used."

"Reduces online tracking
With the free VPN turned on, Opera will replace your IP address with a virtual IP address, so it’s harder for sites to track your location and identify your computer. It will also block many tracking cookies."

"Shields your browsing in public networks
Airports, cafés, event venues - we all sometimes surf on public Wi-Fi. Using the browser VPN feature, you can shield your activity from being sniffed by other users on these networks."

I heard last year Opera was sold to a Chinese conglomerate and was put off by that.

A few folks have been turned off by that, but I don't think that you should be. Indeed, quite the contrary.

First, one of the biggest reasons that folks get VPN's is to avoid the U.S.'s spying on just about everybody. Note that if your VPN is hosted in a country outside of the U.S., the U.S. is highly unlikely to be able to get a warrant to monitor your activities, and they almost definitely won't be able to bully a foreign corporation into cooperating without a warrant as they can do with a U.S.-based company. So...VPN's based in countries outside of the U.S., even ones that aren't located in Western countries, have become not only popular, but in many cases desirable.

Second, while folks have misgivings whenever they hear the word "China", note that China is a totalitarian regime that censors the Internet so that its citizens can't access a lot of news and propaganda. Now, here is a company offering a free VPN that can allow anyone to bypass government Internet restrictions. Does this sound like a company that you want to avoid, or more like one that you really applaud and support?

Also, look at your Internet activities. Are they the types of activities that anyone in China cares about? Folks in China have no interest in your porn viewing, for instance. Most of the stuff that you want to hide, you want to hide from your family, your community, your business rivals, or your local government. No one in China likely cares about any of that type of stuff.

But I agree that if you are, for instance, a contractor with the U.S. Dept. of Defense, a commercial VPN through a U.S.-based company is probably more than a good idea, and avoiding Internet services based in Far East companies is probably a requirement.

I'm really liking Tunnel Bear so far. I can continue to use Firefox, and TB doesn't slow down loading the way Tor does. Tried to check my gmail work account thru Tor and after 5 minutes of waiting for it to connect I gave up. Wondering if I should have "tunneled" to Canada rather than USA?

Gmail is driving me nuts! They want verification every dang time I log in using Tunnel Bear. Any ideas on that one? I have to use Gmail for work.

Good points about Opera.
Thank you both!

I've been using Opera for a few days, and I really like the interface. But - and this is a BIG but - my Twitter account is suddenly being following by a bunch of bots; more and more every day. Half of the bots aren't even tweeting in English, if they've ever tweeted at all. Since this never happened before, it must have something to do with Opera. Quite suspicious.

Are you using twitter with Opera? I use the Twitter app from the Mac App Store.
