What are swapfiles??

Ibook G4 12in 1gig RAM + 24in Imac 2.16 2.5 gig RAM Leopard
I am going through different things to erase on my harddrive and i found a folder named vm that has swapfiles. They are 512 ,256,126, 64 mb files and they are named swapfile1, swapfile2, etc. are these important files or can i erase them?

Swapfiles are virtual memory files:

If your RAM is full, OS X will move some RAM data onto the harddrive to free up RAM for other applications.

It will be deleted/replaced automatically as required by the system - don't manually delete it!
