I purchased a 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro for $300 at a Estate Sale. Everything runs great and I've updated to Sierra...only problem is that the lower set of keys are not working (ZXCVBNM!?) I imagine that the lady spilled something here but I've lifted the keys off and everything appears clean. Could these letters have been deactivated somehow and set up for some other function. LOL probably not. The hardrive was wiped clean before I got it. I don't mind opening her up and putting in a new keyboard. I will be cleaning with 99% alcohol tomorrow unless you fine people have any suggestions.

All of the ways that I can think of to deactivate keys / assign them other functions would be software driven. If you're sure the drive was wiped clean at some point then those modifications would also have been wiped. Unfortunately, spills can cause some interesting keyboard issues even when everything appears clean. Have you tried using an external keyboard to see if everything is working well otherwise?

If the keyboard is indeed fried but an external keyboard works that's an option. You might be able to get a good degree of portability using something like this. I've seen some that claim to be Mac compatible. If that type keyboard doesn't feel comfortable when working at home, a standard bluetooth keyboard would work as the primary keyboard.
