Change photo to JPEG

Hi Folks
I have 21.5 inch, mid 2011. 2.5G Core i5, 12 G RAM, 1T hard drive, Radeon 512 card, and running OSX 10.8.5. I received a photo on MS Word but cannot get it into my iPhoto 08. I know, I should upgrade to a newer iPhoto but the newer ones are totally different and I cannot get on with them. Anyoldsomeway, when I drag the photo from the Word and drop it into iPhoto, is is not accepted saying that it is in an 'unrecognised format'. So my question is, how can I change the format, what ever it is, into JPEG. Additionally I am getting the 'spinning beach ball of death' when I open iPhoto but only for 15 - 20 sec and only in iPhoto - I have over 1.5k photos. Thanks in advance. Brian.

I know nothing about Word and how images are inserted. Try a right click on the image and see what options appear.

Another couple of things you might try: 1) drag the photo to the desktop, open in Preview and see if you can then drag into iPhoto; 2) take a screenshot of the image then drag it into iPhoto from wherever it goes (usually Desktop but it will be the first thing in Finder under All My Files). The quality will degrade with a screenshot but this method will definitely work.

On the latest version of Word, I dragged a picture to a Word document, saved it and then re-opened it and right-click on the image and choose Save as Picture and can save it as PNG, JPG, PDF, GIF or BMP..

Embedding an image in a Word document is a huge waste of space..

Hi Brian - first, I'm on the current macOS (a new name) which is Sierra (10.12.3) - iPhoto no longer exists, i.e. was merged and is now called Photos; also, I hope that you have your 1500 photos backed up in some fashion (and best to have redundant backups if these images are 'precious' to you). Second, can you save the image to a folder in Finder or if you double-click on the image does it open in another app, such as Preview? If the image can be saved, tell us what the extension may be, e.g. BMP, TIFF, PNG, or other?

Preview is Apple's built-in image editor and PDF reader/annotator - numerous image files can be opened - see first image below (Source); if your image can be opened in Preview, then go to the file tab and open w/ the 'option key' depressed which should present a 'Save as...' choice - once selected the file's image format can be changed - see the second screen capture below. Hi Sue - looks like the 'guys' are picking on us! Susan & I go to Florida every spring and alternate the coasts (next month to Miami Beach) - but exactly a year ago, we went to St. Petersburg on the west coast and took a day trip near Sarasota to the Myakka River State Park and saw a LOT of wildlife including the beautiful Roseate Spoonbills (full pic below) - I put together travelogues in the iPad Forums, so if interested check out THIS LINK about the park - plenty of pics, both my own and from the web (the first ones 'stolen' from the web - the second is my own on our boat trip of the lake). Spectacular. Other than in zoos or nature parks, the UK doesn't have huge brightly coloured birds.
