My G5 has the following fault,it will only power up if the cdrw only is connected,attach any other drive ,and it wont power up ,giving a soft click, can anyone sudgest any tricks, and if its a part fail,is it the motherboard or PSU?

I'm not an expert by any means when it comes to older Macs, but it does appear that your power supply may be failing. You can usually find a replacement on eBay or one of the many Mac parts suppliers on the net.
