Does it need to be a Mac? I thought any Windows/Mac OS was useable?

External DVD USB drives are inexpensive and work well from the USB ports of your iMac. Or, you can purchase the Apple External DVD drive which is designed for and will compliment your new iMac.

You are right sir, you can indeed use a Windows machine. I'd only seen the support on my Macs. This article tells you how to do it..

Nice find. I didn't know you could do this with a PC.

Hold your hosses you Texan bronc busters. That will share discs fine, bur read No. 4 on imcopatable discs and burning/erasing CDs and DVDs.

SO krystals back to the original idea. Samsung has a cheap (=$30) DVD writer that will work with your iMac. As it is bus powered it comes with a double headed lead with USB connectors.

I have an external DVD drive but can find no apps to use Ive downloaded "burn" but my iMac refuses to open it. Will Apple's External DVD drive come with the software to rip and burn DVD's

What are specs of your DVD - is it able to record/burn, or just read? Apple's (expensive) SuperDrive does all, as do cheaper drives with the same spec.

Do you get a message saying that if you try to open Burn? If so Right/Ctrl click on the Burn file and then choose "Open" from the menu. It should then open and should open in future in the normal way.

Methinks you are a a novice krystals and running into Gatekeeper. For some reason you will not share model and operating system, however right click on the 'Burn' .dmg file and the click 'Open' and install it. You can also use Disk Utility to burn.

My internal CD/DVD drive on a 2011 27in iMac stopped working a couple of years ago. Last year I purchased a cheap LG Ultra Slim Portable DVD Writer GP65NB60 on ebay. It barely works.
Other than an Apple external CD/DVD drive, can anyone recommend a model they are happy with? I looked at the Apple Super Drive for $79, but it shows that it is not compatible with a 2011 iMac. Why not? Do they make a model that IS compatible?

Dumb question, but will I be able to easily reinstall my Adobe software from an external CD/DVD drive? I recently had the graphics card replaced on my iMac, but totally forgot to ask them about fixing the internal CD/DVD drive.

Thanks... I was just looking at that... and the Samsung 218. I am also looking at generic ones on eBay with prices all over the place. Geez... too many choices... I just want one that works.
I don't trust most of the reviews on Amazon. So many are bogus, paid reviews... especially the 5 star ones that just say "Great! Works well"
If anyone has one that really works well... please let me know.

I bought an external drive for use with both my '08 MacBook Pro and '15 iMac. That drive was not cheap though but it is also a Blu-Ray burner. Got to from OWC MacSales. If that drive fails I won't be spending much on a replacement. I just don't burn as many discs as I did a few years ago.

Do you have another computer around with a working DVD drive?

BTW You're Adobe software should re-install OK from an external drive.

But what I am wondering is that this model is actually an LG... I hope it's better LG hardware the cheap one I got that barely works.

The model that you linked to has a one year warranty and I assume the other drive does too although I have not checked that. If you have any questions at all give their support people a quick email or call. I've bought stuff from them a few times over the last several years. Only had to contact tech support once that I recall. They were very helpful as I tried to Mac sure the upgrades I wanted worked in a Blue and White G3 Mac.
