My re-introduction to the world of Classic Mac's - a little help needed

My name is Reuben and I am 33 from New Zealand

I am new to this forum and finally own a Macintosh SE/30 It was the first computer I ever touched (at 4 years old)

It was my Grandfathers and I have very found memories of it. I eventually owned an Amiga 500 and now have a rather substantial Amiga collection but have always been missing a Mac SE/30. A few days ago I purchased a small "as is" collection which consisted of 3 x SE/30 computers, 3 x mice and 2 keyboards, a 17" Colour Mac Monitor + Two Mac carry bags.

Inside the SE/30s were a Rastorops Graphics Card and a Networking card. One of the motherboards of the SE/30 has some pretty nasty battery leakage damage, the other two just have leaky capacitors.

























I am need of someone to please recap the two non battery damaged boards and I may keep the battery damaged board for spares. Who can provide the recapping service? I can send internationally no worries and pay for services with Paypal.

Also do I need to worry about recapping the expansion cards? They look in pretty good condition

I would say that there is probably next to no one in the world that actually does this specifically as a profession/service. There are probably hobbyist/collector's that could probably do it (but these folks are very hard to find).

The two best options I would suggest are:

1. Find a place that does electronics repairing (especially someone who specializes in repairing older electronic devices/computers). And even better...find out exactly what replacement caps are needed & purchase them. Then all the electroncis repair person has to do is the desoldering & soldering.
2. Learn how to desolder & solder yourself.

One risk with this project. It's possible after replacing the caps that the computer may still not work.

I did quite a bit of recapping myself but not on Apple computers. Mostly done on commercial electronic and some consumer electronics. It's a messy and hit/miss repair especially with electro caps because when they go bad they either explode or leak. Sometimes the leakage bridges circuit board traces and causes all sorts of shorts and damage. Like Nick said, learn how to solder and desolder and do the jobs yourself. You should be able to round up whatever capacitors you need right there in New Zealand.

Have a scan through this list of User Groups Online which may help. The MUGS are now a thing of the past. (Macintosh User Groups for the newer or lesser experienced Mac users.)
