Does anyone know of good quality freeware compression software for Mac OS X?

You mean video compression?

FFMpegX, Handbrake, iSquint & Quicktime Pro all spring to mind...

You can use the built in BZip or you can get Stuffit Expander.

Right click on the files and select Create Archive.
It will make a zip of all the files you have selected.

It's built into OSX.
