I'm trying to watch a quicktime movie but when ever I try I always get this message: QuickTime cannot open the file: "Transformers 01 - More Than Meets the eye 1.avi"
it is not a file that QuickTime understands (-2048)

What can I do about this?

Use Windows Media Player.

Quicktime can play avi's if they are encoded the way QT likes'em. It's not the format of choice though.

That's the problem. EVERY single time I try and install WMP it freezes before it starts.

Try re-downloading it. Perhaps it's a corrupt DL. Also try VLC Player.
