I am having a problem with an iMac7,1. It has gotten very slow recently. There does not appear to be any corruption on the disk and activity monitor does not show anything unusual. I wanted to boot into the hardware test, but it will not let me. I can't get into safe mode or recovery mode either. I am thinking there is something wrong with the hardware, but I do not know what. Thoughts?

Welcome to our forums.

We need to know which version of OS X you're running? From OS X 10.7 to the current version requires booting to the recovery partition in order to check the hard drive. Before 10.7, checking the hard drive with Disk Utility was done using your original install DVD. What I'm getting at is that your hard drive could be on its way out.

It's running 10.10.5.

I suspect it is the HD going too. It was working fine when I last serviced it a couple months back.

What, exactly, did you do to "service" the HD or the iMac. Macs don't need much "servicing" during their lifetimes.

Also safe boot and recovery mode require you to hold down the appropriate keys, not just tap them. You hold them down until you see the boot progressing on the screen.

The last call on the machine was backups weren't working. The user had his external HD plugged into a USB hub which it didn't like. The iMac itself was otherwise fine then.

I did press and hold the keys. It didn't work.

Have you tried running Onyx to clean up the logs and the drive overall? It's a long shot but it's free and works well. It sounds to me like the HD may be starting to go, too.

If Onyx did not help.

- How full/how much free space does the HD have?
- How much installed RAM does the iMac have?
- How often do you reboot the computer?

Always possible the HD may be failing...but want to check on these other area's as well.
