Is there any thing, short of buying a new mac, I can do to upgrade from El Capitan to Sierra?

Two thoughts:

1. The oldest iMac that can run Sierra is a Late 2009 iMac (a mid-2007 iMac is of course 2+ years older). When El Capitan came out...Mid-2007 iMac's barely met the requirements for El Capitan. In fact when El Capitan came out...Mid-2007 iMac's were the oldest iMac's that could run El Capitan. Thus this computer was riding a very thin tight-rope with El Capitan.

2. Do you REALLY need Sierra? If not...keep running your iMac with El Capitan. No need to run out and spend a bunch of bucks if not needed.:)

But honestly. A 2007 iMac (9 years old) in a 2016 computing environment is pretty old. 9 years in "computer years" is like 350 "People Years".;) If not now...then in the near future...a newer computer would be a great idea.:)

You might be able to depending on your processor. See more here. I'm planning on doing this with my 2008 MacBook Pro. I can't find my 8 gig USB drive though so that's the only thing holding me back.

If you're talking brand new...how about an Apple Store near you...a Best Buy store...or Apple.com?:)

macmath, it may be better for you to start a post of your own rather than post a new question into an existing thread. Still as you ask the answer is no. A computer may overheat because the processor is being run at its capacity for an extended time or because the fan is not operating as it should which may be simply caused by dust build up. In any case it does not in itself indicate the end of life for any computer.

You do not have to buy a "new" Mac, only a newer Mac. You could buy a 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, or a 2015 model, plenty of choices. What you should do, if you can, is get a couple of the OS X versions and make bootable USB devices to test out any newer Macs, you look at. Depending on where you look, deals are around, just be patient, so you can get what you want, and have the $$ ready, for if the opportunity arises, you are ready.
