Since I installed Sierra I find that wifi keeps on dropping and has to be reconnected manually.

My wife is experiencing a similar issue with her MacBook Air 11" (late-2010) - when she opens the lid, she sometimes had to manually select our network to reconnect her WiFi.
I checked the settings and everything is correct - static IP, router and masks specified correctly, etc, I even deleted all other networks - still happens, though not every time.

I'd consider rebooting modem and router(s)

Also, see if the same problem occurs on a known good network. Starbucks is always a good bet. There's usually a row of MBPs in every one I've visited lately.

Since your system, Alwyn, is not exactly portable perhaps you could use a phone hotspot to check alternative connectivity.

Thanks for the suggestion but this is a Sierra issue so my preferred option would be to revert to El Capitan as I CCC'd it before installing Sierra. I suspect we aren't the only ones who have experienced the problem.

Could be. There's not much in Sierra that would be a huge loss, especially since most of what there is requires reliable connectivity.

In my case, modem and router are separated, so we can exclude the modem completely. As to the router - TimeCapsule 2TB, it handles two iPhones; MBA; MBP; tv; Sony 65" tv; Sony BR player; an Android tablet (I need that for programming via Bluetooth terminal - doesn't work on iOS); couple of network printers (okay those are on ethernet), without any problem whatsoever.

I suspect there's a driver error for a particular type of WiFi board in Sierra, so hopefully it'll be corrected soon enough ...

Alwyn have you tried resetting the router since the upgrade?

When you say resetting do you mean turning it off and on again or logging onto it? If the former yes; if the latter no. Please clarify what I would have to do if the latter. By the way I use a router with wifi turned off connected to a Time Capsule.
