protecting b/width with Airport??

Sorry if this has been covered before, I am new to all this stuff. I have my airport and my powerbook hooked up and was wondering, a lot of the time it seems quite slow and I was wondering how I set it up to just hook up with my powerbook extreme card and nothign else to prevent this, how do I password it?

in the airport admin utility (on a mac) you can add/change a password once you have selected you base station.

add a passwork apply it and then the wireless base station will restart and you'll be good to go!
