iPad suddenly requires activation

This may explain what happened, although it appears that you have undated beyond the point necessary to counter the known glitch.

If it is any consolation, the same activation issue happened to me although, it only took one try to reactivate it. My iPad4 is running the latest and greatest version...

Thanks. As I have updated all devices to iOS 9.3.4 I would have thought that Apple would have resolved the glitch. Thinking this might be a hacking issue I changed the Apple ID password, probably unnecessarily.
