Not really on the operation, but more the versions and names etc.

I have 10.4.6 currently. The "10" represents OS X, X being the Roman Numeral for 10 correct? Therefore 9.x.x would not be OS X.

With what version did Panther become Tiger? Is that the 9.x.x to 10.x.x switch? Or was this 10.1 to 10.2 for example?

Is there a resource that lays all of this out for me?

Just curious - thanks -

Correct, X stands for "10" and should be pronounced like that, but most people call it "Oh Es Ecks". Before that it was called OS9, which ended at 9.2.2.

Brief History of OSX

"At the time of this writing, Mac OS X has seen four major releases: 10.0 ("Cheetah", March 24, 2001), 10.1 ("Puma", September 29, 2001), 10.2 ("Jaguar", August 13, 2002), and 10.3 ("Panther", October 24, 2003)."

Panther ended at 10.3.9 and after that writing, in April '05, Apple released 10.4 ("Tiger"). We're awaiting 10.5("Leopard") which is due late this year or early '07.

When are they going to run out of feline names for their OS?

Has their been a Kitten or Cat or Bobcat or Lynx?

Lynx and Cougar are two other names Apple has trademarked; so 10.6 and 10.7 will be one of them.

After that I would guess 10.8 to be Ocelot and 10.9 to be Norwegian Forest Cat :flower:

Only kidding!

You mean with naming each release after a cat?

With OSX 10.0.

If they run out of names they could call one Maine Coon Cat or Siamese!! :spook:

Didn't Steve say something about 10.5 being the last version of OSX?

I have listened intently to every Keynote and don't remember Jobs saying that. Again, I could have missed something, but if he did say it though, you would think a lot of people would be talking about it. Doing a search right now.

To be precise, they were codenames, but with the release of Jaguar (10.2), they began publicizing the codenames as actual names to make it more interesting to prospective buyers.

There are 36 different recognized species of big cats. I think they have a few more to go.

Why I would say "ocelot" it out of the running. I could see a bunch of people sitting around trying to remember what the name of it is. Unlike "Tiger", "Puma", "Lynx", ect. ect. Ocelot is a little out of the box for names that are rememberable to those who are new to the Apple arena and maybe even those who are not.

While I must say Ocelots are beautiful cats.

You may very well be right. I recall reading something about this a while back but I don't remember what exactly he supposedly said.
