After upgrading to OS X 10.11.6, I´m not able to shut down or restart the iMac from the apple menu. It cleans the desktop, but the programs are still available. This happened for the first time immediately after upgrading. The only way to do a shutdown is to use the power button or to start a terminal window as superuser and do a "shutdown -h now" command.
I´ve tried to start up from OS X Recovery (Command + R), and run the disk utility, verify reported no problems.
My iMac:
OS X El Capitan
Version 10.11.6
iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)
Processor 3,4 GHzIntel Core i7
Memory 24 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3
Graphic NVIDIA GeForce GTX 675MX 1024 MB
Thanks
S.
