Since updating my Mac with the latest security patch - something about an exploit in pictures - Preview isn't working the same as before. When I used preview before to download from my phone the thumbnails from the pictures on my iphone were small pictures. Now when I do this the thumbnails are blank. Did Apple do something to discourage people from using preview and to start using the Photos App? Or did I do something to change things by accident?

Since you didn't give us any info about your Mac or which version of OS X you're running, we have no idea what security patch you're referring to. As far as downloading pictures from your iPhone, instead of using Preview or Photos, try using Image Capture instead.
