Will this work if my computer doesn't have two USB ports? (It doesn't even have one, actually--it's got the new Mac power port that I've got to plug a USB connector into.) Can I plug the second USB cable into a wall charger?
Most Apple PCs have USB ports that provide enough power that you will not need to use both USB plugs in the cable.

Wouldn't hurt to know the :

- computer model (as Slydude is guessing...probably a newer model with a USBc port)
- external optical drive model
- if the optical drive has it's own power supply (wall oulet plug)
- what sort of cabling you have

Some external USB-based optical drives have a single USB cable to the computer...and if so in this case...you may be able to use one of these USBc to USB adapters:
