Anyone playing this? I just picked it up yesterday, and it's pretty good, though a lot like Doom 3.

It's a pretty graphics intensive app though and I hope they release a multi-processor patch for G5's so I can get better proformance out of it.

Can you not just do 'r_useSMP 1' at the console like you can on the Windows version?

I haven't tried that, but I will and let the result be known

tried that command, didn't work. but I did find an article that said Aspyr is working on moving the SMP support from the Windows patch to the OSX.

Quake Patch

I finished it on PC but I doubt my imac would run it - it's only got an x1600 which is junk as far as I can tell.
What are you running it on?

Since Quake 4 is Intel Universal now - I was pondering the purchase. Is it that good of a game?

Such as, good single player and good game play?

I am kinda tired of hearing about how great the game looks, I want good game play that will keep me entertained for awhile.

So, I guess my FPS choices are Halo, Doom 3, UT and Quake 4...

Yeah, yeah - bootcamp + steam = Half-Life 2 goodness. But I rather stay out of Windows at home if possible.

Thanks,

I like Quake 4, I've got it running on my Intel 20" 2.0GHz (2GB) with the SMP patch applied and its kept me entertained for a few weeks. It's smooth, will run at full resolution without any problems and I haven't even got the graphics upgrade.

As to gameplay, well it's more of the same-old same-old really. Lots of small missions and shoot everything that moves kinda tactics.

There's a demo out, so I'd strongly recommend trying it out first if you're running it on older systems...

SMP - Symmetric Multi-Processor. It's the patch that enables dual-core processor support. By default Quake 4 will only use 1 of the cores but once this patch is applied it uses both and so the performance improves quite markedly :)

I have been playing q4 on my 24" iMac with 256MB vid card and 2 GB RAM. I have also downloaded the latest patch from Aspyr, I must say that it doesn't run that well. It's weird because it's not like it's slowing down, it just flickers and breaks up as I move the view around using the mouse. Even on low settings with and smaller res I get this breaking up/flickering.

Anyone else encounter anything like this?

Personally, nope, runs smoothly on my "old" 2.0GHz 20" coreduo. There's a bit of a slowdown when running at 1600 but I kinda expect that. I've only got the 128MB video card and 2GB RAM.

What sort of settings do you have it on?

Did you have to adjust anything that I might have missed?

I don't have it on anything special, just running Med. Quality, 1280 x 800 widescreen. Frame rate isn't bad, could be quicker but no noticeable tearing. I'm sure it's a case of RTFM but how do I get framerate display on screen so I can post some stats?
