The MBP can support a single external display through the TB port of up to 2560x1600. Beyond that, you'll need to get additional hardware that uses the USB ports to power HDMI/DVI monitors. However, this method usually has the downside of being a HUGE CPU drag when the monitor is doing a lot of work.

The built-in monitor and external monitor are powered entirely by the GPU and as such have no performance impact.

The newest rMBP also can only support one additional external monitor, but it can support resolutions as high as 5120x2160..
