I think this is the last one that allows manual upgrades to disk and RAM, plus it has a DVD Drive :)

New Price is £899.

Compared to what?:) Apple is the #1 place to go for this sort of thing. Of course since this is a mid-2012 MacBook Pro (been around a while) and sometimes you can find MacBook Pro's for sale at other retailers. If you can find a better price than £759 for the exact same configuration (with 12 months of included Applecare)…then go for it.:)

Of course you could also purchase a used mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro…and save some
£££.:)

If you're talking about "is this a good deal" in terms of price/performance. This is really your call. Of course a newer computer will be faster. But it all depends on what sort of performance you need…and your purchase budget will allow. It is a 2012 computer (almost 4 years old already)…so newer MacBook Pro's will certainly be faster (especially the graphics)…and sometimes there are features built into newer OS versions that only a newer computer can take advantage of.

Yes with a mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro…the ability to:

- upgrade the ram yourself
- easily upgrade the storage yourself
- have the built-in optical drive

…can be desirable features. But the mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro is almost 4 years old now. Many folks upgrade their computers every 3-5 years. Maybe not you…but many folks do. Thus at almost 4 years old…a mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro…is at "upgrade age"!;)

It arrived! :)

Unfortunately, I am at work, so can't really give it a try at present :(

Good for you. Hope you enjoy it. Refurbished means, in effect, new. And as Nick pointed out, leaving vintage aside; it has Apple Care, and an optical drive, and you can (and probably should) upgrade the RAM, say, to 8GB. In the future the storage can also be upgraded.

Sounds like a good buy to me.

To be honest it is a bit slow :(

However, it is lovely piece of kit, beautifully made. The mains connector is clever, plus the option of short or long mains lead.

I am still setting things up at present, but I think I will need to go with the memory upgrade. How much can it take - 8GB?

A faster hard drive or even an SSD might be worthwhile as well eventually. I have read a guide on upgrading it but still a little nervous about doing that myself. Time will tell :)

Ordered 16GB Memory and an SSD.

Now I just need to order enough nerve to install it when it arrives :)

Just fitted the 16GB of RAM and 480GB SSD.

Minor hitch the first time with the memory not seated correctly, but the second attempt it started up correctly.

Booted off an external disk, formatted the new drive and used SuperDuper! to copy back from the external drive to the new one.

All 16GB of RAM is identified and it all works. Starts quickly, loads programs quickly and is totally silent.

Amazing :)
