Well what operating system? If it is older you may have to boot from the system install disk.

It was I think lion 10.1

Lion = 10.7

OS 10.1 = Puma (and was released in 2001). I'm assuming it can't be this…unless this is a 15 year-old Apple computer.

I'm assuming there's a typo in your post.;)

Think you are up for a new hard drive. Be aware some late 2010/2011 models require a special hard drive with heat sensors. Apple did not consider this to be 'User Upgradeable' so your best option may be to take to an Apple Store or reseller to have the drive replace. Signs of a drive replaced without the correct heat sensors is like a Jumbo roaring down the runway the fans go that high.

Boot into Recovery Mode. If it doesn't access the drive it is gone.

This is an older thread so it would have been better to start a new one. That said, take a look at the suggestions in this thread and try the suggestions to see if anything works. Geek Squad would not have been my first - or even last - place to go for suggestions. If you have an Apple store close by that would be the best place to go for a free diagnostics. But if that is not an option try the suggestions in this link:

Post back and let us know what you find out.
