Logic Pro X from external hardrive

I want to run Logic Pro X from an external hardrive and wonder if I can use USB 3 or whether thunderbolt is a must?

That's a hefty program to run from an external hard drive. The faster the bus the better; that would be Thunderbolt.

late 2012 mini w/SSD
Does Logic Pro need to be in its original installed Folder in the Applications Folder in order to run?
