Normally Apple products are idiot simple to set up as I have been able to prove.

So I plug it in and the set up instructions are in.... Japanese! Go to the Internet for help.

The help I find is to plug the ATV into my computer and reset it. OK. So I go to plug it into my iMac and lo and behold the supplied connection does not fit the the ATV.

Anyone have an idea. The only thing I am happy about is my wife was not home to see me fumbling around with this damned thing.

So.... off the the Geek Squad?

I would sooner through my computers out my 15th-floor window than take anything to Geek Squad. You'd be better off just burning that money for warmth.

Go see a REAL Apple Specialist, Apple Store, or more simply go get a USB-C to USB cable (ie, the connection on the back of the fourth-gen Apple TV is USB-C).

But shouldn't the product have come with the correct cable? There was one included in the box.

Besides I should not be spending any money in that I bought it 3 hours ago. I could simply return it.

Wow, I had a LCD projector that had the same issue. We were having a community meeting and wanted to "show off" the new brighter projector. All the menus for setup were in Japanese! What saved our bacon was the instruction manual had actual pictures of the different drop down menus so we were able to work our way through them to change the language settings.

If you bought the Apple TV at Best Buy (Geek Squad reference) then take it back. It was miss identified and sent to the wrong market. Or you can try working through the pictures of the menus on this link to set it to the correct language.

According to the documentation on the web site for the Apple TV (which is very easily accessible), the included cable is a Lightning to USB cable, so it is not intended for what you're trying to do (servicing). You need to buy a USB-C to USB cable, from say Monoprice or someplace, because what happened would normally be handled by a shop and not the buyer, because it doesn't normally happen.

I'm sorry but it does not make any sense that there would be a cable included in the packaging that does not fit the equipment. Why would anyone need to buy another cable to replace one that should have been there?

I'll let you know what happens tomorrow. It will either be returned, or reset and another suitable cable provided.

The correct cable has been included - it is for charging the remote.

If there is no easy way to change the language, which would be pretty tough without being able to read the menus, I'd just take it back where you bought it and get them to give you one that is in English.

Thank you,

The instructions in the box are VERY limited. There are probably more on screen but I forgot all the Japanese I ever knew  Who would have intuitively thought the included cable would be for the remote? You are right, it is.

So, now I am going to look a bit more on line to see if I really am going to be getting that much more with the new ATV. Does SIRI search for anything on Netflix or are her searches only for what is subscribed through Apple?

I would not have wanted to have been in your place with your great new projector. I avoided most of the embarrassment by not going through this when my wife was around. Thanks for the reply and making me fell not alone.

End of Story:

Took it back and instead of changing the language Best Buy/Apple simply replaced it. As in the quote about something being foolproof can be overcome by a great enough fool.... well I did it. When I had first plugged the ATV in I must have inadvertently clicked the remote while the menu for languages was on screen. By doing that I had picked Japanese.

OK. This time I had some patience and the set up was a breeze. They have you pare one of your other devices with the ATV and this in turn gives it all the information it needs re: WiFi, and Apple accounts. In comparison to the older versions this one is a dream to operate. The voice recognition is excellent

And yes, the search should also work for Netflicks though I am not sure (not owning one) if that feature has been implemented yet or is awaiting an update.

Yes it works in Netflix too. Great marketing tool for Apple i.e. "show me all the movies of Robert Dinero".... suddenly about 50 titles are there including Bronx Tale all available from iTunes.
