I have downloaded El Capitan to my MacBook (mid 2010) which is currently running on Yosemite. I have restarted a couple of times but when I check about Mac it tells me I am still on Yosemite. I have plenty of disk space and have not had notices to say anything is awry. Update tells me I have no more updates so I assume I have downloaded. Any help with this? Regards.

Did you start and run through the installer? You only mentioned downloading it.

If you haven't, ensure that you make a backup before you begin.

I went through the normal installation process that I did with previous versions of OSX. Yet, when I click on About this Mac it says I am still operating on Yosemite. The main problem now is that when I go to the App store there are no updates.

Well there are no more updates to Yosemite if that's what the Mac thinks is still installed. Can you explain what happened after you chose to upgrade to El Capitan from the App Store?

Do you have multiple disks by any chance? Is it possible you installed EC to a different disk than your primary boot one?

Go into Applications Folder and look for 'Installer El Capitan'. I like to verify the hard drive in Disk utility, and then double cliclk the Installer.

Thank you all for your help, especially harryb. I found the installer and managed to get El Capitan installed, although it has taken most of the morning and numerous restarts to improve the sluggish performance and the spinning wheel of death.

My pleasure mate. How much memory have you installed in the MB Qball? The last few releases are pretty hungry beasts and most recommend at least 8GB of memory. Your model can handle 16GB.

It is just the stock standard 4GB so I might have to think seriously about some more. But, touch wood, it is all working perfectly now.

How do you "secure empty trash" on El Capitan?
