I just replaced the internal HD in my early 2009 24" iMac with a 2TB hybrid Seagate drive (st2000dx001) and in addition to the fans wanting to always running high (installed fan software to control this), the computer randomly goes to sleep while I'm using it...quite often. The display and computer both go to sleep (fans go off) and I have to wake it back up with mouse/keyboard. It actually just happened while writing this.

Any thoughts on what is causing this? Is there a particular connection that could be loose causing this? I'd love to know the likely root cause before I open her back up and start checking everything. Thanks!

G'day and welcome to the forums.

Well hybrids in general get a doubtful rating here, and Seagate in particular. Don't think the early 2009 model had the problem with the heat sensor late 2009 models had where the fans would roar like a 747 on take off. Think you are in for some back checking on cables etc.

Did you remember to reconnect the display temperature sensor connector adjacent to the processor fan (bottom left fan). That's the only cable you would have had to remove to lift up the display when replacing the HD, and if left off all 3 fans would run flat out.

Steve just hit the nail on the head! That is what I was thinking also.
