Is there a way to sort this list? It would be nice to be able to change the order by moving an entry in between others to create the desired order. This is on a iphone 6 with ios 8.4 Thanks!

What exactly are you referring to? Favorites for contacts or what?

The Favorites tab in the phone app. If I go through my contact and assign that number to favorites, it places them in the "favorites" tab in the phone menu. Some might call it speed dial?

Assuming your mean 'Favourites' in the phone app, the answer is yes.

Click 'edit' and little handles (three horizontal lines) will appear at the far right of each phone entry. Use these handles to move items up or down the list order.

ETA: cross posted with your clarification.

Ah, OK. I wasn't sure what you meant. I don't think you can sort the favorites by number (1, 2, etc) since it looks like they appear in alphabetical order. At least on my phone that's how they sort. (I'm on iOS 8.4)

Nice. I didn't know you could sort that way. Thanks from both of us. :D

Try this and see if it works for you.
1. Bring up your Favorites list on the phone.
2. in the upper left corner of the list choose Edit. You know you're in edit mode because of the red circles with - signs on the left of each contact.
3. On they right side of each contact in the list, near the edge of the screen each contact has three very light gray lines. Tap the lines and hold your finger on it.
4. As long as you are holding the contact you should be able to slide it where you want in the list.

I thought so too. I was on the verge of deleting my favorites and adding them in the order I wanted them when I saw that tip somewhere. I don't have many contacts in Favorites so it wouldn't have taken long but this was easier.
