Canoscan 8800F scanner very temperamental

My Canoscan 8800f is terrifically temperamental. I have Mac OS10.8.5, and use Image Capture to scan. But very often IC doesn't show a scan option, only Hide Details, Overview, and Cancel and under Format only shows TIFF, PNG and PDF, no JPG. Sometimes it's okay, often not. What is wrong? Maybe there's better software than Image Capture for scanning.

Have you checked the Canon site for new drivers for your Canoscan? As far as better scanning software than Image Capture, there is always VueScan but it's not free and fairly expensive. However, if you do a lot of scanning and require accuracy, then VueScan may be what you need.
