I have Yosemite. I have recently replaced the battery, new 1Gb hard drive, new 8Mb RAM. Download speed in excess of 80Mbps, Upload around 14Mbps. Constant spinning rainbow. Delays in apps like facebook, twitter, youtube can reach 1 min per command. I have tried anti malware. I am at a loss. My wife's $350 PC has no speed issues with the same applications. What to do?

Hello and welcome to the forum! :) Just to get your thread started, some more information would help: 1) What is the exact model/year of your laptop; 2) Who did the hardware upgrades; 3) What malware & maintenance apps (e.g. MacKeeper) did you install; and 4) What have you tried - please be specific. Hopefully, the added information will elicit some posts - Dave

Hi Chscag - LOL! :) I assumed that was a mistake, i.e. maybe 1 TB? Dave

1GB was ample in my black Directors Special 5500 with 96MB of memory. Bit better than my 128MB original LC with 8MB of memory!!

Ah yes I remember those days.
So there are at least 9 reasons I can think of why a Mac may run slow other than system or mechanical faults.
1. Spotlight is still indexing the drive. This may include external drives.
2. Software updates running.
3. Low disk space
4. Low RAM
5. Something using most of the CPU processing capacity.
6. Too many apps open at the same time.
7. Not enough RAM for your usage.
8. A desktop full of clutter, more icons than wallpaper.
9. Failing Hard Drive.
Some of these are easily eliminated and others are not but it's usually one of these. A slow process of elimination is the only way to find out

Additional to above, did you undertake a clean install on the new hard drive or did you restore from a time machine backup? What was the reason for fitting the 1TB hard drive, simply short of storage capacity or were you having problems? If a non retina MacBook Pro, what screen size?

Oh yes, my first HD in the mid-80s (on a PC clone running DOS, of course) was 20 MB - and boy we could not fill it up back then - ;D Dave
