I am a new iMac owner running on Yosimite and am wanting to make nice slide shows with pictures I take. What is a good software choice. I do want to make titles and have some fun with it.

iMovie will do what you want and it should be free and available on your iMac. You can import your pictures, add transitions and titles, even add music. You can then export (share) them to a file, or Facebook, or YouTube or email them.

There will be a learning curve but there are a lot of tutorials available on the web.

iMovie isn't on my version of Mac and will I be able to burn the movie after I'm done to a DVD? I do have a burner in this Mac

I forgot it was included early on as part of iLife. It is now $14.99 from the app store.

If you want to burn your final video to a disk you will have to share the video out as a file then use another app to do that like Burn which is free. I have no experience with the app as I use adobe encore which is part of my Adobe Production Suite.

Another option you might consider is making the slideshows in Keynote, then saving that slideshow as a movie.
