I'm trying to do a fresh install of OS X on my Imac 2011. I did a hard drive format from disk utility and chose the Install Mac OS X option but somehow it's downloading the Mac OS X Lion instead of Yosemite. What did I do wrong here? How come it's not installing Yosemite. Every article i read on the fresh install of OS mention it should download Yosemite.

How did you install Yosemite originally?

The reason it's downloading Lion instead of Yosemite is because you're using the internet recovery and that always installs the original version of OS X that came with your iMac. Your 2011 iMac (probably late 2011) came pre-installed with Lion.

Gave you the directions for downloading Yosemite and erasing the drive and doing a clean install after burning Yosemite to a USB thumb drive and booting from that. IS there an operating system on the iMac currently?

Lion nis the OS that was on your iMac when new so that is why it wants to download that. i you create that Apple ID and as suggested stear well clear of PC shops regardless how well meaning.
