I don't plan on using bootcamp to partition the hard drive so I don't know why it is on the desktop (alongside Mac OSX). Can I move it to the trash or will that permanently kill it (disabling any future use)? How can I safely move it from the desktop? This is on my 2008 Macbook Pro with Yosemite. thanks!

We need some more information click on the icon and press Command+I. Does it say that this an alias? How much space does the Get Info window say is being used by this icon?

If you are going to use BootCamp it kust partition the drive, which must be in one single HFS+ partition prior to commencing.

Did you acquire this computer from someone else recently. Ot sounds like someone has already created a Bootcamp partition to run Windows. To remove it you will have to laugh the Bootcamp Assistant found in the Utilities folder and choose to remove Windows. That will also get the drive back to a single partition.

Yes I just got this laptop but I have no desire to put Windows on it. Could it be that is has Windows on it? How would I know? Here is what the Partition Inspector gave me:

*** Report for internal hard disk ***

Current GPT partition table:
# Start LBA End LBA Type
1 40 409639 EFI System (FAT)
2 409640 172284647 Mac OS X HFS+
3 172284648 173554183 Mac OS X Boot
4 173555712 234440703 Basic Data

Current MBR partition table:
# A Start LBA End LBA Type
1 1 409639 ee EFI Protective
2 409640 172284647 af Mac OS X HFS+
3 172284648 173554183 ab Mac OS X Boot
4 * 173555712 234440703 07 NTFS/HPFS

MBR contents:
Boot Code: Unknown, but bootable

Some may think BootCamp funny, however our friend Sly meant 'launch BootCamp Assistant'. These darned modern spell checkers auto-correcting!

Here's what I would do to find out for sure:
1. Power On your Mac.
2. As soon as you hear the usual start chime / bong hold down the Option key on the keyboard.
3. After a few moments you should see two drive partitions. One has the name of your mac or its hard drive. The other is probably called Bootcamp.
4. Use the arrow keys too select the BootCamp one and press enter. If windows is installed you will be greeted with the Windows boot screen. If you are sure there is nothing you have put there and need you can shut down Windows and restart the Mac.

Windows shuts down the same way it would if you were running it on a regular Windows box.

cool, it does have Windows 7 on it. I'll probably sell this laptop since I have a better one that I will use once I put bigger memory chips in it. this will be a good selling point.
But I need your help with something.
The previous owner left a lot of crappy Arabic music on it that I want to erase. I opened the folder examiner (or whatever you call it) and found those songs. But I can't delete them. The heading of the examiner says "computer> Mac OSX (E)> Downloads" which is weird because I restarted in the Windows section, not the Mac OSX section. When I try to delete each one it says" Do you want to move this to the recycle bin?" and I respond YES and then it says "file too large for destination file system". Some of these files are only 360Kbytes. what gives? I made sure the recycle bin was emptied and has plenty of space to accept new trash.
Also when using Windows command/C does not copy as it normally does when using the Mac OSX. What is the copy shortcut when using Windows?
