Hello, been awhile since I've been on. :p
So I have a 10.6 ISO. Can I burn it on to a CD and use it as an update disk on my iMac? (Intel)

It depends on a lot of things:
- what 10.6 is it?
- what iMac do you have?
- what OS X version is it using?
etc., etc.
Basically, what 10.6 ISO is it, and created from what? and what exactly are you trying or attempting to do????

You really shouldn't be using a 10.6 ISO. Apple only distributed 10.6 on disk. So this is really the only proper media to be using. A genuine 10.6 install disk from Apple only costs $19.99::)

I know it's 10.6, but not what ".X" at the end it is :p
I have an iMac model 5,1 from 2006 running Mac OS X 10.4.11 Tiger.
Is it possible to use a 4.7GB DVD+R in place of a CD?

Where'd you get the ISO from? As Nick noted, 10.6 was only every distributed on optical media.

link removed...

My uncle gave me a legit 10.6 install disc, but it was so scratched and dirty it wouldn't work, so I resorted to the only real way I knew how - ISO. I could try VirtualBox but I wouldn't get the performance I want/need (Minecraft).

I was trying to be "gentle" in my previous post. But I will be a little less gentle now.

We do not support this sort of discussion at Mac-Forums. Either do the right thing & purchase the official 10.6 install disk for $19.99. Or the thread will be closed.

Thanks for your understanding.:)

The only real way to know how is…purchase another install disk…if the disk you have is too damaged.:)

I just fought I'd mention Apple's END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT when their OS X was distributed on disks, i.e.: OS X 10.6.x, states the user can create a backup disk or image for their own use and even gave directions for how and how to use it in their Help menu.

I can't recall the details how to use a 10.6 image but I'm sure a google search will produce an answer.

Things with OS X install images got a bit more complicated with the release of 10.7.x and later versions.

I can't guarantee if it would work with an image and the installer, but that iMac should have a compatible drive, but check your actual model and see:

CD/DVD = "...slot-loading DVD+R DL "SuperDrive", …"

So the steps used in the previously mentioned article went fine until it asked me to authenticate. I put in my password, then I get an error message - You need to authenticate. I try again, but instead get no choice to authenticate. Help? I put my password in fine...
"You must authenticate in order to restore." -Error message
EDIT #2 - seems I'm not the only one who has/had this problem: http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/os...lity-restore-you-must-authenticate-error.html (It was never answered, but still)

It may depend on who created the image and if any password was used, and if it was your uncle, then I'd guess he used his credentials.

If not, in the Get Info of whatever drive volume you're using, try checking the "Ignore ownership on this volume".
Maybe. ;)

PS: That $20.00 to Apple is starting to sound like a good deal and a bargain if your time is worth anything at all. :D

We're probably getting into a gray area. OP mentioned that the original disk was very scratched & dirty. I'm thinking that this backup is supposed to be made from the original disk owned by the OP (or OP's uncle).

Since this ISO file was probably not made from the original disk (too damaged)…it most likely was downloaded from the internet somewhere. And a downloaded ISO of OS 10.6 I don't think is condoned by the Apple EULA.

There is no options on the Get Info screen. Just a solid screen. (SanCruz)
On the other screen (for the actual contents of the drive, aka UNTITLED) I get the other (blank white) drive. (Owner is disabled, BTW)

BTW: Are you really sure which volume you're working with and not trying to restore back to the image or mounted volume?? It's easy enough to make such a mistake. ;)

Are you selecting the volume in the Finder and then using the Get Info or select then command + I (eye)?

You should get a small window like this with an ownership option at the bottom:

Sorry MarioM, I think we've all gone as far as we can here and it might be a bit different if you lived closer and were a client of mine, and even then, I'd probably suggest you spending the $20.00 with Apple and purchasing your own copy of Snow Leopard, and/or even maybe Lion 10.7.x, as bad as it was, and ML 10.8.x is beyond that iMac.

And besides the grey area of your uncles old scratched DVD, and any image from it is probably kaput when it was created anyway.

Or try a local Apple fixit store or guy who might be able to help you out. ;)
