My MacBook Pro OSX 10.10.4 shuts down after a few minutes of no activity. How can I turn this off?

Just a few questions to help clarify things a bit:

1. Is the machine completely shutting off or is it going into sleep mode?
2. About how long does it take for this to happen?
3. Are any programs running at the time? Is it always the same ones.
4. Does it also happen when you are using the computer?

Slydude,

Thanks for answering. I am a 20+ year programmer, but in Windows. Here are your answers:

1. I am pretty sure it goes into sleep mode. I am a newbie so I'm not certain.
2. I'm guessing it's about 10 minutes. I haven't timed it.
3. Yes, there are programs running. Mail is one. It is not always the same ones.
4. No, is does not happen when I am working

It acts like it is intentional, but I can't seem to find the place in system preferences where I can change this. It didn't use to do this so it's probably something I did. Thanks for the help. Btw I bought CCC.

I think it might have been "Energy Saver". Computer sleep had been 15 minutes - I set it to 3 hours. Displays the same. Thanks.

OK that clarifies things a bit. It certainly sounds like it is going into sleep mode instead of a complete power down. Here's something to check that should get you straightened out:

1. Go to System Preferences (under the Apple in the upper left corner of the screen or in the Dock).
2. Open the Energy Saver Preference Pane.
3. Look at the settings for Screen Display Sleep and Computer Sleep. You can adjust the sliders to give more time before the system goes to sleep. The farther you move the soldiers to the right the longer the system or screen wait before going to sleep.
4. If the settings are grayed out and you can't change them click the padlock and enter your administrator password.

The screen display can be set with a separate sleep time from the computer.

Edit: You beat me to it. Nice work. Feels good to solve your own problem doesn't ti?
