2011 Macbook Air, wireless internet. I checked my internet speed and it's over 100mbps, but when I'm downloading a file, it says 150KB/s, so a 200mb file takes about 15 minutes to download. I'm a total non tech person, so please let me know what I should do or what info I need to provide to get some insight. Thanks!

Check your internet speed again.....

Charter Communications - Nationwide Speed Test

It also depends where and what you are downloading. If you are using torrent downloads, check how many seeders there are. If there are only a few, then your downloads will take forever.

Thanks! I checked the speed again using the link and it says 108.86 Mbps download speed. I'm not downloading torrents, but MP4 video files from various locations. I've tried downloading different video files and music files, and the speed shown in the download window is always 100-150 KB/s.

Don't know if this info is relevant but here it is anyway:

Download Speed: 108.86 Mbps (13.61 MB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 11.96 Mbps (1.5 MB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 17 ms
Jitter: 4 ms

I've also tried accessing the download links via different browsers but the download speed is the same.

Obviously your internet works fine as well as your airport card. Its not your machine...

The speed improves (though still not as fast as what my internet speed indicates) if I use a download manager application like iGetter or Jdownloader, but if I download directly using the Mac downloader, the speed drops to 100-150KB/s. I just wonder if this is something related to my computer.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with your computer and everything to do with the upload speed of the sites you are downloading from.

Just because you have 100M download speeds doesn't mean the site you are downloading from has 100M upload speeds and if they do, it does not mean they are willing to permit a single downloader to use up all their bandwidth or a large portion of it.

Boy this is an old, old thread from 2015. I don't think the OP still has a problem.
