Iphoto Unreadable

I use an external HD to store my photos...and there are lots of them.
Regularly I receive messages when opening IPhoto that it has discovered inconsistencies or that it is unreadable. WHY does this happen??

2021 M1 MacBook Pro 14" macOS 14.4.1, Mid 2010MacBook 13" iPhone 13 Pro max, iPad 6, Apple Watch SE.
A little more information required:
What Mac model?
What OSX?
What version of iPhoto?
Is your iPhoto Library on the External HD?
Do you have a backup?
Have you verified the External HD with Disk Utility?
