OS download fails during reformatting MAC

Hi,
I decided to run a format of my mac last night, formatted Mac HD using disk utility and started the reinstallation... woke up this morning with a prompt, 'OS couldn't download...'. Held the power button and this was what I saw after...hasn't changed since then.
Please help :(

2019 iMac 27"; 2020 M1 MacBook Air; macOS up-to-date... always.
The image you see just means that the Mac can't find a bootable volume (i.e. no OS is installed, or the installed OS is corrupt). Worst case, it means the drive is dead. Just try it again.

BTW, why did you feel the need to do this in the first place?
