Restore Yosemite data from time machine

After replacing hard drive in iMac G5 and running Maverick I cannot restore my backup files running yosemite

That would be correct, you will not restore a TM backup into a version of OS X that is older than the version used to create the backup. If you were using that same TM backup when the machine was previously running Mavericks, then you could restore it to the last Mavericks backup, but then you would lose everything created since that point in time and would need to manually copy all of that over.

Install Yosemite and then restore from your TM backup.
If you are planning on staying with Mavericks, try using the Migration Assistant.

(There is no such thing as a G5 that can run either Mavericks or Yosemite.)
