Have had this MBP for a few years and have been very satisfied with it, however, I have noticed recently that [frequently] it makes a good bit of noise. I used to make fun of my wife's laptop when the fan made that much noise but, now the tables have turned.

The noise is the fan kicking in to cool it down and until this past year was never this noticeable -- It is also quite warm/hot when this occurs -- hotter than I remember, previously.

Is this a sign that it is about to cease working or, SOP for an aging laptop? It also seems like it takes longer to process commands [do not do any heavy computing] mainly booting up, loading browser or email client, excel/word, etc.

-----------------------------------

On a different note, is there a command that will 'tidy up' the files on the hard drive?

My Windows machines have a utility [and the name escapes me now] that would compact the files and make the drive run more smoothly.

Thanks

Sounds pretty clearly to me that the fan needs to be replaced. Not really anything to do with the the whole MBP kicking the bucket!:)

If you have a flat tire on a car…you replace the tire. If you have a bad fan in a computer…replace the fan.:)

You might download Onyx and run that. It's an excellent utility used by many of our members. Make sure to download the correct one for your version of OS X.
