Hey guys, a dude wishes to trade a used iphone 5s for my laptop, he says he forgot the password, what can I do to get into the phone and test it please? Also, anything I can do to know whether it's stolen or not please as I don't intend on keeping it for myself, I will resell it and don't want the new owner to have any issues at all.

If he forgot the password, then he should restore the iPhone via iTunes and reinstall iOS from scratch. Once done, you can get the IMEI number. Read it yourself (don't assume he'll give you the right one). Plug that into this database:
https://imeidata.net

If it has been reported as stolen, it "should" be flagged when you check that number. This isn't 100% reliable, but it's something.

Depending where you are, there are national specific registries of stolen phones. For example, here's one that searches the Canadian "blacklist."
