iPhoto crashed Mac

I was uploading iPhoto to snapfish and ended up downloading numerous JPGs to my desktop and crashing my iMAC. I had to shut off the MAC but when I rebooted, all of my desktop icons disappeared and the menus weren't usable.I booted in SAFE mode and everything is sluggish. I tried rebooting in normal mode and the icons are still not there / menus don't work. In SAFE mode when I tried to move one of the JPG files to the trash, it give me a warning "some of the items you are moving are in use by another application. Moving the items can cause problems with the application using them". I opened iPhoto and closed it but it still didn't appear to help.
