iPhoto runs slowly/malfunctions after moving Library to external drive

Due to my iMac hard drive getting full, I moved my iPhoto Library file to an external 1T drive where I keep most files. It loads slowly, the icon file preview doesn't work and sometimes if I open a file I get a black screen with just an ! in the middle. Help!

If this is a USB 2 drive we're talking about, of course it will load slowly. It's USB 2. If you have USB 3 on your machine, put the drive into a USB 3 enclosure, with the USB 3 cable, and watch it fly!
