my wife's 2010 Pro is running 10.6.8 can I install Yosemite on this computer, and what is the downside?

Also, your help appreciated: Where should I get Yosemite if it is 'yes'?

Looking at the OS X Specs, Macbook Pro from 2007/2008 are supported. You get the update from the Mac App Store on the main page.

As to how it will affect your system, please do a search for Yosemite on this forum, that topic has been discussed at great length and you will get your answers..

You will need to set up an Apple ID if you do not have one to be able to download Yosemite. It is a +5GB download. Coming from Snow Leopard suggest you back everything up to an external drive and format the drive and do a clean install. A 2010 MBP can handle mup to 16GB of memroy and suggest you have 8GB for Yosemite.

Big jump four operating systems at once.
