How do I find out how many gigabytes are in a folder on a MAC with Yosemite OS?

The same way as with any Mac OS version, or at least one way – select the folder and then right-click -> Get Info and read the size shown in the Get Info window.

Easier way is to click the folder and use the kb shortcut ⌘I (command + i) to bring up the Get Info window . .

Oh now I feel those good old days memories creeping in - the ones before the days of the "mouse". :Smirk:

I was a keyboard shortcutting fiend during those good old days. And then I purchased a copy of Windows 3.0, what a piece of junk, but it came with a mouse. I could not imagine ever needing one. ;D

An now, oh how it has changed. I am a mouse/trackpad connoisseur - very picky very OCD. :* But I still remember those handy keyboard shortcuts. ;D

Ahh, yes, some of those old memories still lurk here and I also was a pretty avid keyboarder years ago but with Macs only, and I can still recall how the Apple developers sort of snuck in a two button mouse that Steve Jobs, as I recall said, would never happen or be supported on any Mac OS while he was in charge!!!

Yeah right!!! ;)

Mouse is much easier - a lot of people have the old habit of selecting the folder first, but there is no need for that.
A right click on an item will select that item and open the menu in a single movement.

Then you either move the cursor a half inch to select your option or move your hand off the mouse/trackpad back to the keyboard to use the shortcut.

edit:
Plus, it's unlikely I even have the ability any longer to memorize 16 keyboard shortcuts it would take for all the options I have available with a right click on a folder. ;P

Am I missing something here? I just go into Finder, select the appropriate drive and all my folders are listed with size and other, customisable information (Date modified...)

No you're not missing anything but that information id not always shown. What is shown depends upon which view is being used (icon, list etc). The Finder's View menu (Show view options) also affect how this information is displayed.

Another thing which may be of interest to the OP:

If you have multiple folders or files or photos, highlight them, then control+cmd+I gives you the sum total in MB, GB for all of them. Useful if you want to know whether a bunch of files will fit into the available space on a stick or EHD, for instance.

In Icon View, you can have it display the number of Items in a folder, but not the size.

List view. If 'Size' column not displayed, right click in the header row and select.
