Moving contacts from MBPro Contacts App

from gmail to iCloud.

Is this possible?

Yes it is. I use to have android phones and I kept my contacts with my gmail account. When I switched to iPhone I set up my google gmail account for email, contacts and calendar. I waited for everything to sync and I could see my contacts and calendar on my apple devices. Then I set up my iCloud account to back up my contacts and calendar and a few other things in System Preferences -> Internet Accounts.
