If I attach an iOS device and look at the music that's on the device, there is some songs with a circle (dashed line) in the left most column and those songs are greyed out. I can find no description of what that means (the column has no header). I'm purely speculating that it means that song was orphaned on the device, i.e. somehow the sync back to iTunes was lost.

Anyone have the right answer? :)

Thanks

likely it means that you cannot transfer those songs to iTunes.

post a screenshot so we can see what you see?

Have you downloaded songs from places other than iTunes onto your iOS device?

You'll notice that in this screen shot that every "circled" song has a "non-circled" version as well, although one (selected specifically to show this) is titled differently. In the past there have been some that did not have a "non-circled" version. These also appear to all have any lyrics and album artwork missing.

These keep popping up. Typically I go to "manage music manually" and remove these.

Questions:
1) What are these?
2) Why do they keep appearing?

…and no, I do not load music except via iTunes or buying directly from the iTunes store

Thanks

This is driving me c-r-a-z-y. I deleted all of these and re-synced. Can't recall now what happened but it wasn't correct, so I deleted every song, planning to resync. 512 of theses "circled" songs reappeared. Went to my phone and deleted all music content. Resync'ed multiple times. 512 "circled" (orphaned) songs still show in iTunes as being on my phone but my phone shows no music at all.

Last time this happened I had to wipe/reset my phone. I really don't want to do that again.

I fancy had to do a hard reset of my phone and the 512 orphaned songs finally disappeared. This is way to hard...
